Two Chats.

For this weeks edition of Wild Bird Wednesday I'm featuring two different 'Chats'. Both are Passeriformes of the Turdidae (Thrush) family.

First is the [European] Robin (Erithacus rubecula ssp. melophilus). This smart individual is our 'British' version and our unofficial national bird which has currently made my garden its feeding territory. Unlike its continental cousins it is not shy and readily follows me around 'chatting' and hoping for a handout.

The second 'chat' is more suitably named as the [European] Stonechat (Saxicola rubicola ssp. hibernans). Its name originates from the Latin;  saxum - a rock; colere - to dwell and torquis - a collar. This individual is a male in post breeding moult, photographed today perched on a dead Pine on the edge of a lowland heath.  FAB.

  4. Great close photos of both birds. They are beautiful. I especially like the robin - that was what they looked like in nature books I was given as a child.

  5. I would LOVE the experience of having a 'chatty' robin chat follow me around the yard, talking to me. Wow...envious I am. Both birds you share are extraordinary Frank.

  6. Our Yellow-breasted Chat has not yet found a secure place in the taxonomic tables. Presently grouped with our New World Warblers, it really does not closely resemble any particular family of birds.

  11. Very nice birds. Oh I can only imagine the friendship that will bud between you and your robin:) If I don't feed my hummingbirds, they hover in front of my window looking straight into my soul. "Get your butt outside and change our feeders!" I am their slave:) Somehow I think the robin is more like puppy love:)

  17. I am envious of your UK robins, they are so tame. Although I feed our residential robins they are still so shy. Wonderful captures of both birds, and the Stonechat is a beauty.

  19. I think the European robin is much cuter than the American version. The Stonechat is a pretty bird too.
